CHAPTER 13

We go deeper into the woods, off the trail, to practice our ‘powers’. I guess we know now what the last power is. Jason calls it ‘bouncing’. I think it should be called something cooler, but I’m not sure what, and it’s his power to name. I try talking to animals that fly or crawl past me. I even have a fly complain to me about people and flyswatters. I don’t like the sound it makes when it talks though–very buzzy. Jason was trying to figure out what made him bounce, as he calls it. I sit up in a tree, scaring the heck out of the birds flying past by butting into their conversations.

“Hi.” A quick voice chirps at me. I turn and see a small, reddish chipmunk standing on my branch.

Smiling I say, “Hello.”

She beams. “So the rumors are true! They are here!”

“Who?” I ask.

“The five. Five humans would get Powers when we need them most,” she explains.

I have to admit, having this Power is pretty cool. Smiling at the chipmunk, I imagine the possibilities.

“What’s your name? Do animals have names?” I ask her.

“Ro-eeee!” she squeals and runs down the tree.

“What is it?” I call after her.

“Boo!”

I scream, waving my arms. In a split second, I realize the stupid mistake I made. I lose my balance and feel myself falling, tipping off the branch. My hands grab at the air as I fall. I squeeze my eyes shut, bracing myself for the impact, when suddenly–

“Oof!” I fall into a pair of arms. Dizzy and disoriented, my eyes fly open. Jason is smiling sheepishly at me. I glare back at him. Exhaling loudly, I stand up out of his arms, take a few steps back and brush myself off.

“I’m so sorry Myra! I never meant for you to fall,” Jason scratches his head and walks towards me.

I splay my fingers and hold up my hand to stop him.

“Just don’t,” I say. I’m still trying to catch my breath from the shock. “Look, I’m thrilled and all that you’ve got your Powers down, it’s just …” I turn and walk towards my bag but he bounces right in front of me. I take a step back and my jaw drops at his audacity.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have scared you like that, especially with people after us.” He steps forward and takes my hands and leans down a bit to look in my eyes.

Oh fine. “Okay, I forgive you, I guess,” I whisper. “That was kind of cool,” I admit to him. “But it was dangerous!” I look at him and he smiles guiltily.

Looking beyond me he observes, “Looks like I spooked the little guy pretty bad.”

Turning, I see Ro-whateverhernameis cowering in a small hole in the tree. Grinning, I walk away from Jason and toward the chipmunk.

“C’mon, it’s okay.” I call softly to her.

“But he, he,” she stutters.

“I know, he just wasn’t thinking. But he is nice, and he’s also very sorry,” I emphasize, glaring back at Jason, who shrugs.
